Ever wondered what hedgehogs eat? Yup, the little cuties eat mealworms. How gross! haha.
Anyway, if you are thinking of keeping hedgies, you can feed them a diet of:
- Mainly cat food, premium quality. They eat so little, they won't eat you out of land and house....so buy the best.
- Supplement with mealworms. One or two per day for the protein is good enough. Buy the freeze-dried types like above. There have been concerns that the real ones are too feisty for them to eat but that's debatable.
- Get some fibre into their diet. Feed fruits and vegetables. Share your fresh fruits! Just bite off a chuck for them.
- Some meat. Strictly non-marinated. Chicken meat is appreciated. I tried beef but they didn't seem very enthusiastic about it.
- Live insects. If you find an ant or two, prompt the hedgies to have a nibble.
That being said, if you try a new kind of food and realise they don't like it, try again. These creatures are fickle eaters. They change their minds about food all the time. Mine didn't touch the mealworms for a while. Then they discovered how yummy and crunchy worms were. From then on, mealworms to them are like ice cream to kids!
